New blood filtering system claims to use magnetic nanoparticles to remove pathogens

Researchers designed a new blood filtration system that uses magnetic nanoparticles to remove pathogens and cancer cells from the blood. Called MediSieve, the system works by connecting a patient to the same machine used for hemodialysis. As blood passes through the machine, magnetic particles selectively bind to harmful molecules present in the blood. The researchers are currently testing the technology on malaria, … Continue reading New blood filtering system claims to use magnetic nanoparticles to remove pathogens

Researchers explore the antimalarial properties of a little-known South American plant

Plasmodium falciparum is a protozoan parasite that’s known to cause malaria in humans. It infects certain species of mosquitoes (only females) from the genus Anopheles, which transmit the parasite through their bite. Among the Plasmodium species associated with the disease, P. falciparum is by far the deadliest. Malaria caused by this particular parasite is common in sub-Saharan Africa, where it is estimated to kill … Continue reading Researchers explore the antimalarial properties of a little-known South American plant

Vitamin C and zinc for the management of malaria

In this study, researchers from Nigeria and the U.K. evaluated the effects of different combinations of vitamin C and zinc on hematological parameters and the mortality of mice infected with the malaria parasite, Plasmodium berghei. Their findings were published in the journal Food Science and Human Wellness. According to research, iron and zinc deficiencies are common in … Continue reading Vitamin C and zinc for the management of malaria

The Precise Power of CRISPR/Cas9 System Creates Exciting Opportunities for Genetic and Epigenetic Editing

A breakthrough genome-editing technique known as CRISPR has been shown by MIT biological engineers to disrupt a single parasite gene in a matter of weeks, with a success rate as great as 100 percent. In light of this and other recent research, the possibilities for the CRISPR/Cas9 system are substantial for precisely editing the genome and … Continue reading The Precise Power of CRISPR/Cas9 System Creates Exciting Opportunities for Genetic and Epigenetic Editing

Hydroxychloroquine precursor quinine has been used as medicine since the 1630s

When experts point out that hydroxychloroquine has been used safely for many years, they’re not exaggerating. Since it was first developed in 1950, it has been safely used by countless people to treat malaria, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. But its precursor, quinine, goes back even further. In fact, it was first used by Inca herbalists … Continue reading Hydroxychloroquine precursor quinine has been used as medicine since the 1630s

Purple mangosteen found to be a powerful remedy for malaria

Purple mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is not just a sweet-and-sour snack. The rind of this fruit contains numerous phytochemicals that can suppress the growth of the parasites responsible for malaria. What’s more, these natural compounds can be taken alongside standard antimalarial treatments to improve the latter’s effect on drug-resistant protozoans. One out of every two people in the … Continue reading Purple mangosteen found to be a powerful remedy for malaria

Scientists identify an effective malaria remedy in an overlooked African tree

Researchers have established that the leaves of the Syzygium guineense, also known as the waterberry tree, contained anti-malarial activity, in line with its traditional use in preventing and treating malaria. The study, published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, looked at how the leaf extract of S. guineense in mice infected with malaria. For the study, mice were inoculated with the malaria … Continue reading Scientists identify an effective malaria remedy in an overlooked African tree

Did the Red Cross Cure Malaria with MMS?

Malaria is a deadly illness that still affects many parts of the world. Over a million people a year die every year from Malaria. In the late 1970’s, a man named Jim Humble discovered a sodium chlorite solution, which he dubbed MMS, that has produced extremely interesting results when used against certain diseases, including malaria.Unfortunately, … Continue reading Did the Red Cross Cure Malaria with MMS?
